2021 is the year of Lithuanian Tatar history and culture.
On this occasion, artist Eglė Narbutaitė created several postcards featuring Kaunas Tatars – one of the oldest ethnic communities of Kaunas.
One of the postcards depicts the Kaunas Mosque with doors open to everyone. The mosque was primarily a cultural centre where the community could gather and cherish its culture and customs. The drawing is intertwined with Tatar folk art motifs. The wooden mosque in Kaunas was built in 1910 by Aleksandras Iljasevičius.
Another postcard by the artist depicts an open Tatar gate, symbolizing the link between the past and the present. The Tatar Gate stood at the junction of the present-day I. Kanto, D. Poška and J. Gruodžio Streets and guarded the Tatar suburb where this ethnic community lived in the 15th century.
