Vilnius St Spirit Monastery Festive Choir (conductor T. Skovorodko, soloists N. Krauter, V. Vepštas) was founded in 1840 together with the Orthodox Archdiocese of Vilnius and Lithuania. Since that time, the choir has been actively participating in Sunday and Holiday Eucharistic services. The choir has 30 members, including both professional musicians and amateurs. Some of the famous choirmasters include Grigorij Širma, Viktor Rovda and Aleksej Puzakov. The choir’s broad holiday repertoire consists not only of the “Znamenny”, Kievan and Grecherski chants, harmonized by Alexander D. Kastalski, Pavel Chesnokov and Sergei Rachmaninoff. The choir considers standard repertoire, which works in harmony with the elegant baroque interior of St Spirit Monastery, just as important for its artistic image. Even though the choir’s mission is to accompany Eucharistic services, its members often organize solo concerts during which they sing secular music.
